Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy uses the properties of water for support, assistance and resistance. This type of treatment is an effective way to treat old or new injuries that may be limiting your daily activities. Benefits of aquatic therapy include the following: low impact exercise, decreases weight bearing stress by as much as 90%, improves circulation, and decreases muscle tension.

Many patients with Multiple Sclerosis benefit from the cool pool at the YMCA (82 degrees Fahrenheit) as it is easier to keep the body's core temperature regulated at this water temperature. In warmer water, like in many other pools, your core temperature rises faster and this can exacerbate symptoms associated with M.S. Therefore, in a cooler pool, patients with Multiple Sclerosis can exercise more efficiently.

Common diagnoses treated in the aquatic environment also include: arthritis, post-surgical conditions (i.e. orthopedic surgeries), sprains and strains, multiple sclerosis, balance / instability, back pain. In the pool, we can also tailor a rehabilitation program to include sport specific resistance training.
